Rene Descartes is known for the quote, “I think, therefore, I am.” He also created the foundation of the scientific method and so paved the way for modern civilization. The formulation for it came to him from a series of strange dreams. In them, he found himself caught in a whirlwind and chased by a group of ghosts. And he had a huge craving for melons. When the winds died down he was taken to a room that tried to set him on fire while the sound of thunderclaps was a constant barrage. He escaped to yet another room but this one was serene and had a single book. When he opened it there was only a single line in it that said: “What path shall I take in life?” Then a man appeared, said “Yes and no.” Then he and the book both disappeared. Descartes believed the dream was a message from God to reinvent the way humans think about the universe. I just want to know if he ever got that melon.
